New Zealand’s iconic children’s author Joy Cowley is at the top of the country’s New Year Honours list this year. She has been awarded the Order of New Zealand, the highest official honour in the nation. The Order of New Zealand is bestowed for “outstanding service to the Crown and people of New Zealand in a civil or military capacity”. She has been recognised for her services to literature, and she’s best known for her children’s books.
A few years back, the StormyDog/Noggin team, working with Shine TV, were part of the production team on a feature for the Nzone Focus programme about Joy Cowley’s book featuring Tarore, a young Maori girl from the Matamata area, whose love for God, and for the Bible, survived her murder and went onto change Maoridom forever. The pupils of Matamata Primary School in the Waikato were chosen for the official launch of a new children’s book about her, written by Joy Cowley.
